I have been using Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop to create illustrations for most of my life--though I started out on pencils and pastels, I gravitate toward digital artwork because it allows me to achieve a wider range of styles and depths, with room for error. My work is mostly portraiture, including characters from shows I've watched and books I've read. I typically start with a series of black and white sketches and work front-to-back to achieve my final piece (seen below).

This piece shows my interpretation of Benvolio from romeo and juliet. The most difficult parts were achieving the "spotlight" effect and making the shadows look realistic in the hands and hair.

This piece is in a slightly simpler style, but the monochromatic approach narrowed the range for error. Working in only one shade was new to me, but I enjoy the comic-style of this piece.
